Chess Final 1981

The Claremont Chess Tournament of 1981 was held in the Royal Oak Pub on Finglas Road (long since demolished), but the final was played in secret and the outcome was not known until the game, between Joe Finegan and John Maye, was re-enacted with live pieces on the outdoor chess-board as part of the summer Festival. The contenders stood on a platform and called out their moves, acted out by the live pieces.

Chess tournament final, 1981, Joe Finegan v John Maye

Finegan played an adventurous, attacking, game, but Maye defeated him with a cautious, defensive, strategy.
